Understanding The Future Impact of Electric Cars

Abstract: The electric vehicle market is an increasingly important aspect of the automotive industry.

However, as a relatively new technology, several issues remain present within the industry. An

analysis is utilised to examine these issues, along with how they affect the industry and how they can

be tackled. Several key issues that affect the electric vehicle market, as well as how efforts to address

these issues influence the market, are identified. The analysis also includes the examination of ethical

issues, with the issues that arise from the production of raw materials for electric vehicles. The

analysis and examination of ethical issues display a wide range of problems in the industry. However,

it did highlight the efforts being made to lessen the effect of these problems by various groups, such

as regulation by EU and US governing bodies on the materials mined. From this analysis, this paper

identifies that many of the other factors examined are directly or indirectly influenced by political

and economic factors, also examined in this review.

NIO's Robotaxi partner Mobileye IPO valuation will be over $50 billion when it get listed in US.

Mobileye was listed in 2014, with a market value of up to 8 billion US dollars, which broke the record of Israeli companies listing in the United States at that time. In 2017, the giant Intel made its revenue private for US$15 billion.

According to Intel, since privatization, Mobileye's revenue has risen nearly three times. In the latest three quarterly reports, Mobileye achieved a total of 326 million U.S. dollars in revenue, an increase of 39% year-on-year.

It is reported that Mobileye recently shipped the 100 millionth EyeQ chip system. At the same time, Mobileye has reached cooperation with more than 30 OEMs around the world on 41 projects. The list of OEMs includes GM, BMW , Volvo , Volkswagen, etc.

According to data from Guidehouse Insights, a US energy consulting company, Mobileye owns about 80% of the world's assisted driving vision system market.

In addition, Mobileye and the Chinese new car power NIO launched Robotaxi vehicles, which are expected to provide Robotaxi services in Tel Aviv, Israel’s second largest city, and Munich, Germany next year. Unmanned freight is also a sector that Mobileye is working on. It is expected to provide a comprehensive and fully unmanned delivery service in 2023.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said: Intel’s acquisition of Mobileye has achieved great success. Mobileye expects revenue in 2021 to be more than 40% higher than in 2020.

Affected by the news of Mobileye's upcoming IPO, Intel's stock price is up 8.5% to $55.3.

Bloomberg also commented on this: Intel has long been the leading manufacturer of computer processors. It has given up market share to competitors such as AMD and lost its technological advantage in key markets. In this context, Mobileye is a special highlight.

The importance of Mobileye is self-evident.

However, as the assisted driving market is booming, chip giants such as Nvidia , Huawei , and Qualcomm have also increased their codes and released various high-computing power autonomous driving chips:

Nvidia's self-driving Orin chip has a computing power of 254TOPS, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride platform has a single chip computing power of 60TOPS; EyeQ5 has a computing power of 24TOPS, and the next-generation chip EyeQ6 will not be available until 2023.

In addition, a number of emerging suppliers of smart driving chips are emerging in China, such as Horizon and Black Sesame. These players are constantly eroding Mobileye's market.

Recently, Qualcomm announced a cooperation with BMW at its investor conference. BMW’s new cars will start using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride autonomous driving platform (including chips) from 2025. Before this, BMW was an important partner of Mobileye.

Earlier, Tesla also chose to part ways with Mobileye and developed its own FSD chip; the 2021 ideal ONE model chip of the new force ideal car was also changed from EyeQ4 to the journey of the domestic chip company Horizon 3;

In August of this year, NIO ES8 owner had a car accident while using assisted driving. NIO Pilot is independently developed by Wei and is equipped with the Mobileye EyeQ4 autopilot chip. Mobileye responded to 36Kr: The computer vision algorithm it provides only supports a few driving assistance functions, and it does not actually participate in the realization of the NIO NOP pilot assistance function.

However, this cannot deny the fact that the Mobileye algorithm + chip solution is relatively closed. As the trend of automobile intelligence becomes more and more prosperous, the assisted driving functions of car companies need to iterate and evolve continuously. This undoubtedly requires Mobileye to provide a more relatively open ecosystem.

To this end, the end of September this year, Mobileye has set up dozens of people a scale R & D team in China, responsible for China in response to local customer needs households. Mobileye also said that in the future, it will provide more customized services for the Chinese market.

The IPO listing may provide Mobileye with more opportunities to go ahead, including chip solutions with higher computing power and more flexible local team support.

But before that, Mobileye has to prove one thing to investors: it is worth $50 billion.
